CNC Machinist

A CNC Machinist, also known as a CNC Setup Operator, works with computer-controlled machines like drills, mills, lathes, and presses to manufacture parts. This role requires operating CNC mills and lathes in a small batch repetitive manufacturing environment. Employees will be expected to operate a variety of makes and models of CNC mills and lathes. Machine operators are responsible for fit, finish, and cleaning of each part produced.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare CNC machines with the correct attachments and parts for each job.
  • Enter instructions into the CNC equipment based on blueprints and plans.
  • Operate and monitor the machines to ensure they are running correctly.
  • Identify and resolve issues with machine programming or operation.
  • Inspect finished product to ensure specifications are met
  • Perform regular maintenance and inspections on equipment
  • Follow all safety procedures and regulations

Must Have

  • Education: Certificate in machine shop technology or machine tool technology.
  • Experience: 1-2 years of experience in mechanical assembly is preferred.
  • Skills: Strong analytical, communication, and computer skills. Understanding of mathematics, particularly trigonometry, geometry, and algebra
  • Attributes: Attention to detail, self-motivation, and ethical behavior.

Daily Tasks

  • Read dimensions and tooling instructions from work orders and drawings
  • Perform machine set-up by ensuring proper programs, tooling and offsets are used
  • Load and unload raw material and parts, ensuring proper part alignment and positioning using part holding clamps, jaws, and chucks
  • Monitor machine operation to detect malfunction or out-of-tolerance operations and adjust machine controls as required
  • Verify machine calibration and settings by measuring parts against drawings, using micrometers (ID and OD), dial calipers, and dial indicators 
  • Produce consistent, quality parts within tolerances of ± .0005"
